Slovaks visit the oldest Lutheran community in Brazil

Nova Friburgo, Thursday, January 26, 2012 (ALC) - A Lutheran’ group of the Republic of Slovakia visited the Community of Nova Friburgo, in 22th January.
50 components, led by Pastor Miroslav Hvozdara, participated in the Sunday service, watched a movie about the efforts of the congregation before the last year tragedy - when heavy rains caused the collapse of hills and slopes - known the Lutheran Memorial and visited the oldest cemetery Lutheran in operation.


The group went through the South American countries and decided to visit the Lutheran Community of Nova Friburgo, founded in May 1824 by a group led by Friedrich Osvald Sauerbronn - who was parish priest in Becherbach, Germany. Sauerbronn traveled aboard the frigate Argus, the first vessel to bring the German immigrants who formed the first community on Brazilian soil, which he was the first Lutheran pastor.

The service was celebrated in English, Portuguese and Slovak, with participations in German, providing a cultural diversity among Lutherans. The community Coral showed up and caught the attention of Europeans. At noon, a barbecue lunch, tropical fruit flavors, know the Cemetery Jardim da Paz (Garden of Peace) and asked questions about the beginnings of the Lutheran Church on Brazilian soil.
