Campaign mobilizes society in the repair of crime

Antonio Carlos Ribeiro

Civil society organizations participating in the campaign to transform the torture center known as "House of Death" in the "Centre of Memory, Truth and Justice in Petropolis." Mentioned in public by the Defense Minister Celso Amorim, who worked to improve the country's image abroad in the government of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, was when the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is now engaged in a more noble cause: to return the basic right to bury the dead victims of the military dictatorship.

He is also engaged in another question, equally important: preventing corporatism prevents the memory of the suffering of thousands of Brazilians to crystallize as shame against civilian police and military officers who joined the apparatus of repression and feel as other citizens of the only country in which the torturer trembles before the gaze of the victim, without the courage to face the court.

While the signatures are added to the request (http://www.peticaopublica.com/?pi=P2011N7357), directed by Professor Zwinglio da Mota Dias, of Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF), millions of people are aware of the treatment dispensed to thousands of Brazilians. Flagrant contradiction, the same people who swore to defend the territory with his life, despised the life of our countrymen, whose existence was responsible for turning the simple geographic area in the nation.

As the dungeons of medieval European castles and concentration camps, among other areas of the denial of humanity by human, by motivations of the most elementary to the most ideologically, the space that appears only survivor of the report, after the narrow streets, winding and the high of Petrópolis city, materialize.

It's a white house, red wood windows, granite boulders at the base, beautiful garden with access denied by the iron gate. The house at Arthur Barbosa Street, 668, Caxambu square, had aesthetic beauty, the hill. Apparently, a common construction, was used by the military 40 years ago to pull the latest information of defendants. Then, death, dismemberment, mathematical distribution of parts of bodies of different holes in different cemeteries.

The absence of meticulous records of imprisonment established by the Army Information Center (CIE) sought to sweep away signs of the existence of militant leftist organizations arrested, tortured, killed and hidden by the military dictatorship (1964-85). The dungeon was treated by the codename Codão, as shown by the report (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eecOi9jQ9cA).

Only one fact has escaped the expedient of 'intelligence' military: a prisoner who was tortured, battered, raped and forced to denounce her sister as subversive, who was there from May 8 to August 11, escaped with his life after being abandoned almost dead: Ines Etienne. Mercy. It was up to this woman, a victim of soldiers with great brutality, and without courage, remember the set of facts to denounce the dictatorship.

"I was devastated, sick, reduced to a worm and obeyed like an automaton" he said in a statement to the Brazil Lawyers Order (OAB). Hidden in the sense of duty and guided by a caricature positivism, faced the international campaign that denounced the illegal arrest, and even among the prisoners who could not get out alive - everyone - was played in front of the house of a sister, weighing only 32 pounds.

Among the prisoners of the House of Death, whose memory was rescued by the memory of Ines Etienne were Aluízio Palhano, Ivan Mota Dias, Heleny Guariba, Walter Novaes Ribeiro, of VPR, Paul of Tarsus Celestino da Silva, of ALN; Joaquim da Silva Mariano and Carlos Alberto Soares de Freitas, the of VAR-Palmares Marilena Villas Boas, the MR8; and Mr Rubens Paiva.

The strength of this woman dribbled the labyrinthine reasoning of the military. She also recorded the codenames of the torturers, denounced the existence of the House of Death and the doctor's office and former military Amilcar Lobo, pointed her finger in his face denouncing him as "Dr. Carneiro”. The Regional Council of Medicine of Rio banned his record.

The memory and persistence of this woman were so cruel to the most Brazil inhumane regimes who, almost 20 years after the end of the dictatorship, she received a carpenter at home on September 10, 2003. It was found the next day with a head injury, resulting from traumatic brain injury, becoming a person with limitations.

In 2009, the living memory of the House of Death received the award for human rights in the category "Right to Memory and Truth." The Minister of Civil House, Dilma Rousseff, wept. President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said: "My dear Agnes, I just wanted to tell you one thing: it was worth every single thing you did, you took each shock, you had each push." For the right to memory, the society is mobilized in this campaign.
